Microsoft sell ads for Windows 7 desktop

Microsoft announced today that it plans to sell advertisements for the Windows 7 desktop.

Advertisers have the opportunity to buy themes for people using Win7 based computers. This means they can customise desktop images and promote their own products – with options even for audio files.

Before you all start reaching for your email client to send your words of anger to Gates and the gang it is worth pointing out that this is only a pilot scheme and users can choose which (if any) they want to download and use.

As most of you already know the “Windows Personalisation Gallery” offers a desktop branding interface to allow people customisation options for background images, sound effects, borders and window colours. Although we think it is a slightly flawed concept, Microsoft are saying that the trial program will allow the end user to view and support brands they like. If you love Coca Cola then you could place their famous red can on your desktop (with matching themed windows) and even perhaps have someone belching when you open a folder … the possibilities are endless.

“The new Windows Theme Experience and Windows Personalization Gallery in Windows 7 allow consumers to customize their technology to reflect the things in life they are most passionate about,” Microsoft vice president Darren Huston said. “These are great examples of Microsoft innovation and technology coming together to enable top global brands to reach audiences in new and interesting ways.”

Microsoft have stated that this advertising program will run until October of 2010 to see how it is received. Ducati, Twentieth Century Fox, Porsche, Infiniti are the first companies said to be interested.

“People connect emotionally with films and the stories they tell,” vice president (TCF) Bettina Sherick said in a statement. “These are the same people who personalize their digital experience. We are thrilled to be able to bring our film properties to consumers and let them engage more deeply with the stories that move them.”

Microsoft themselves are also participating in this advertising trial and we hope that they start advertising Windows 7 via the OS itself because I would find that rather amusing.
