Nvidia to power forthcoming Nintendo DS2

It has been a rough year for the industry, with only a few hardware based companies such as Apple making a substantial profit. Heaven Media heard this morning from industry sources that Nintendo are planning on using 2nd gen Tegra to power the next generation DS handheld. The rumours initially were that the 65nm Tegra would be the choice but we hear that the 40nm second generation Tegra tech is going to be a viable option. If this pans out to be true, this will be a huge leap in gaming performance for the Nintendo handheld.

The current gen Tegra which is used in the Zune HD features two pixel shader units, two vertex shader units and two texture mapping units and operates at a frequency of 130mhz. This translates to a rough real world performance experience of 35 frames per second when running Quake III at 800×480 with both AA and AF enabled.

nVidia are claiming that Tegra 2 has around four times the power of its predecessor and while the specs on paper seem to be slightly less impressive it is worth pointing out that the chipset also includes an ARM 11 CPU. It is unsure however if Nintendo will opt for the ARM cpu as they have other alternatives.
