UK hackers sentenced to jail

A court in the UK sentenced four men to prison for up to four and a half years after they admitted to using very sophisicated trojan based software to steal around £600,00 from bank accounts.

The gang used a trojan called PSP2-BBB to monitor their victim’s browsers which inserted special fields into bank related pages and when the users entered in their private information the trojan intercepted it and sent it back to the crooks. These pages were ‘cloned’ pages from NatWest banking sites and the gang used an array of money laundering mules to move the money from the UK to other countries such as the Ukraine – the very location of the computer server than was used as the hub of the scam.

A total of just under 140 customers were affected and over half a million was transferred according to the Press Association. In a very proactive stance the Royal Bank of Scotland later recovered almost £140,000.

The UK authorities are keen to point out that this has been the first collaboration between the financial industry and the Police Central e-Crime Unit which was founded earlier this year to stomp on the growing Cybercrime industry.
