Heaven Media spoke with some industry insiders today who have told us that Western Digital plan on rolling out a 3TB hard drive in the very near future. Currently they offer a 2TB Caviar Black 3.5 inch drive with four platters at 500gb per platter. The areal density is around 330Gbit/Sq in.
For a 3TB drive to be released this would need to change to 750GB per platter, a significant increase of 50% on the Caviar Black drive already on the market. Toshiba are leading the way with platter density right now with the MK6465GSX 2.5 inch drive which offers 640 GB on two platters which translates to 528.5 Gbit/Sq in.
This upcoming release has not yet been confirmed by Western Digital however, but if we hear any more details regarding this potential unit we will keep you guys informed.
