Mobile provider O2 has admitted on their Twitter page that they had an issue with their network over a period of 2 days which left iPhone users unable to connect. Until recently they were the only provider of iPhones in the UK due to a time limited exclusivity deal with Apple and O2 users reported a “could not activate cellular data network” when they attempted to go online.
O2 have not admitted the percentage of users affected but estimates put the figures easily into the thousands. This issue didn’t affect text messages and phone calls, just online access. O2 admitted “a fault with the allocation of IP addresses” and they iniitally promised to have it up and running that night.
This planned time frame was missed however and issues were still appearing today – however a few hours ago it appears that most of the issues have been fixed. Still, all in all its an embarassing incident for 02, especially now that they have competition in the UK from Orange and Vodafone.
