Avast update fixes false positives

Popular anti virus AVAST yesterday issued an update which caused a lot of issues for its user base. The program started to report a plethora of clean files as being riddled with malware and spyware.

The company posted a blog detailing the false positive issue after an update was sent out just after midnight  “which started flagging hundreds of innocent files as a ‘Win32:Delf-MZG’ Trojan (or, in less common cases, as ‘Win32:Zbot-MKK’).”

This unfortunately created a knock on effect of causing the program to report innocent files, such as system files and even device drivers … as being infected.

The company were innundated with complaints from the public and they managed to get the issues resolved around 6 hours later and then sent out another VPS update which corrected the problems. By this stage however the program had deleted and quarantined a plethora of important system files on many users computers.

Avast have announced an apology to their customer base affected by this problem however it is small consolation to those users who have apparently had to restore their operating system to a prior state.
