GamingHeaven’s Game of the Year 2009 Awards

Quality over quantity is a motto strategy developers seem to have embraced in 2009. We can’t remember a year that was as starved of strategic titles as 2009, but thankfully all of the major releases were behemoths in terms of content and longevity. Would we want more titles? Sure, but not at the expense of gameplay quality, which this year’s contenders certainly delivered.

Dawn of War II

Warhammer is a brutal world, and 40.000 years in its future, things haven’t changed much. Machine-gun mounted chainsaws, an advanced cover system and continuous updates all make sure, that this is a game worth playing.
A walking fortress? Yes, that is one of the playable characters. This little gem takes the DOA recipe and polishes it until it is blindingly shiny. And then it throws it all into a beautifully rendered overworld, where demigods battle out in hope of ascension.
Defense Grid:
The Awakening

The tower defense genre has seen multiple iterations (especially on the iPhone), but few managed to push such a refined version of it at the player. And to top it off, the game has very appealing visuals, not something one would associate with the genre.
Empire: Total War

Napoleon made it seem easy, but conquering half of Europe is all but that. How else do you explain managing tens of thousands of troops, countless provinces and straining your eyesight at what has to be the best looking representation of mass warfare.
Halo Wars

The world is ending. The Halo franchise managed to wriggle its way into the strategic genre and outdo every other game out there – delivering a sound strategic experience on a console (*gasp*)!
Hearts of Iron III

Real men don’t play games, they play Hearts of Iron. It is a bit of a stretch to call HOI III a game, as it is closer to a strategic simulator. Were it not based on WW2, we’d be constantly afraid we’d managed to hack into the Pentagon and were controlling actual troops over Europe.
