Intel launch Next Gen Atom CPU

Product image

Intel have launched the new range of Atom netbook CPU’s and they have said that they will help battery life and system performance within the targeted marketplace.

The single core Atom N450 processor is 60 percent smaller than existing Atom processors and consumes 20 percent less power according to Anil Nanduri, the director of netbook marketing at Intel. The processor actually only requires 5.5 watts of power according to specification sheets from Intel.

The benefits of the new processor are not just related to power consumption however as it also opens up other opportunities for netbook manufacturers as they can actually create thinner devices due to the reduced size. We expect to see a variety of these at CES in Las Vegas in a few weeks time.

The N450 will run at 1.66ghz and it has graphics and memory controllers on chip and will be able to handle multimedia faster – Intel have also said that the pricing will remain on par with the last generation. Intel have also launched two Atom processors for low cost, small form factor desktops. The single core Atom D410 and the dual core D510 will operate at 1.66ghz and will have 512kb and 1MB of cache respectively. Both are low power processors as the D410 will consume around 10 watts and the D510 around 13 watts.
