Intels Larrabee gets canned

Intel have said that Larrabee will not be launched now as a discrete graphics product for the consumer market and instead they are positioning it to developers and academics as a software development platform.

Intel publically stated that they were “behind where we had hoped to be at this point in the project” both in regards to the silicon and the software development.

This has been a costly venture for Intel in regards to both time spent on developing and raw cash outlay with figures said to be in the tens to hundreds of millions. Larrabee was Intels venture into the high performance and gaming market spaces.

Interestingly, even though Jen Hsun Huang is known to be rather ‘outspoken’ he stated a long time ago that Intel’s Larrabee was nothing more than a Powerpoint threat – basically insinuating it would never get to market but was more just a ‘paper’ project.

Intel also stated that Larrabee’s prospects in the HPC sector seem to be promising and they are also spearheading a ‘throughput computing development platform’ based on the technology also.

Seems that once again we are back to the two big players in this sector  – ATI and nVidia.
