Another good bit of news for Seagate followers today, as well as the release of their first SSD drive they have also announced a new 2.5 inch hard drive targeting the ultra slim notebook arena.
The Momentus Thin series is a 2.5 inch drive at just 7mm thick – this is a saving of 2.5mm when compared to a regular 2.5 inch hard drive- ideal for a maker wanting a thin as possible unit without having to delve into the expensive SSD category.
While a saving of 2.5mm seems such a small point, in the ultrathin sector this saving can allow makers to product cheaper business and general use machines – Hard disk drives are actually one of the limiting factors when it comes to an CULV machine. Apple in the past had to use a 1.8 inch drive, basically lifted from their Ipods to power the Macbook Air for instance and these are much slower.
Seagate will be officially launching this at CES 2010, and we will as usual be there to report.
