Valve has continually developed, updated and polished Team Fortress 2 since its release two years ago. One of the most popular requests from players was that they wanted to be able to test out certain elements of the game against AI opposition. Valve have now duly obliged and it is possible for all players to add “bots” to their games and servers.
Although the commands have now been implemented via an update, it has been noted by the Left 4 Dead creator Mike Booth that they are still a “work in progress”. Making the comments on the official TF2 blog he stated that their inclusion is still strictly in the beta stages.
A lot of work has gone into the AI to make them behave like human players would and they have been given realistic reaction times and aiming ability. They also react to their environment as opposed to inherently “knowing” what actions a player has taken, making them a more realistic propositon to play against and with than similar bots in other games.
As it stands the bots can only be used on three King of the Hill maps, Viaduct, Nucleus and Sawmill, but as they are tweaked it is almost certain they will be implemented throughout the game as a whole.
Valve have also encouraged players to provide feedback on how the bots handle, making the development something like an open beta.
