TJX sniffer writer gets jailed

The coder of the famous sniffer program which was used in the TJX credit card fraud scandal has been jailed for two years. Stephen Watt, aged 25, from New York was also told he would be spending a further three years on probation after his release.

Watts was a member of the gang led by Alberto Gonzalez who stole more than 40 million credit card and debit card numbers from TJX and other retailers between 2003 and 2007. This gang used unsecure wireless networks of retail companies to launch further, deeper attacks into corporate systems which would target credit card databases.

A statement released by the United States Attorney’s Office reads “Carmen M. Ortiz and Steven Ricciardi, Special Agent in Charge of the United States Secret Service, announced that STEPHEN WATT, age 25, of New York, was sentenced to 2 years’ imprisonment, to be followed by 3 years of supervised release, a condition of which was electronic monitoring of any computer use. He was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $171.5 million dollars. WATT pled guilty to conspiracy charges on October 28, 2008.”

He certainly didn’t get off lightly, but this was a particularly high profile case.
