UK Gets Broadband Tax

Product image

UK Chancellor, Alistair Darling has announced that the Government is to press ahead with a £6 per household tax which will see funds allocated to improving broadband access in rural areas.

The yearly tax which covering all houses with a fixed phoneline will ensure that 90% of the UK has access to (super-fast) broadband by 2017. The scheme is designed to raise £170m per year however British Telecom  estimate that £5bn is required to complete the work.

Should the Conservative Party win the next general election they have promised to scrap the tax, believing that the public should only fund broadband after the market  has taken it as far as they can.
