World cup will be broadcast in 3D

Sony have won the contract to show the 2010 World Cup in 3D – the first time a football (soccer to our US readers) event will be shot in 3D, this has been confirmed by FIFA – The Federation de Football association earlier today.

Sony will be happy to win this contact because they are able to release footage later in official bluray disc format, although the Blu-Ray disc association has still to confirm a standard for implementing 3D images on Blu Ray. Sony have already made a public statement to say they are releasing their first 3D enabled Blu Ray players in 2010 and they are also going to kit out the Playstation 3 with 3D support in 2010.

3D is the latest craze to hit the ‘geek gadget market’ and although its still in its commercial infancy all the major manufacturers are keen to sell goods which support it. The World Cup is such a huge stepping stone for public acceptance that Sony will be rubbing their hands with anticipation of making a small fortune.

The news also reached us recently that UK satellite broadcaster SKY are wanting to switch on a 3D channel in 2010 so you can bet your bottom dollar that they will be bidding on the World Cup 3D matches to capitalise on the platform.
