Xbox 360 Avatars To Promote Physical Fitness?

Gaming avatars are always an easy way to present what you’d want to be to the wider online community your interact with. As they have become more popular and more customisable people are coming up with more and more outlandish ways to display themselves to the community they interact with online.

Microsoft have recently been looking into the typical gamer lifestyle and have speculated that the ability to remain anonymous, or adopt radically different persona, mights encourage a lack of physical fitness. A new application they have recently patented might look to explore this theory further.

Microsoft’s patented application called “Avatar Individualized by Physical Characteristic” was spotted in the US Patent and Trademark Offices’ online database. The idea behind the technology seems to be introducing a way to monitor a gamers general health with a Wii Vitality like sensor.

The avatar you had to use online would be as out of shape as you were, so if you piled on a few pounds over Christmas, you would realistically have to think about burning off those calories before trying to present yourself a muscle bound action hero.

Quotes taking from the patent details include:

“Physical data that reflects a degree of health of the real person can be linked to rewards of capabilities of a gaming avatar, an amount of time budgeted to play, or a visible indication. Thereby, people are encouraged to exercise.”

This development follows details being released regarding Project Natal, a camera based motion sensor add on for compatible games and software. As part of the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo, Microsoft demonstrated how this software could take a scan of a players body and transport it to the screen in a proportionate silhouette. This software would also include a series of titles requiring physical activity, not unlike the Wii Fit and Wii Sports series.
