App store hits 3 billion downloads

After just 18 months, the Apple App Store has recorded its 3 billionth download, although game specific numbers aren’t available, it is still a remarkable figure.

Despite not releasing game specific numbers, the App store has seen a recent up turn in developers supporting the iPod touch and iPhone including Codemasters with their F1 game and the GTA series of games making their way on to the system. With prices seemingly much cheaper than either the PSP or the DS, the platform has become part of many developers and publishers push for better margins in 2010.

There are currently over 50 million users for the App store and over 20,000 games available, which in comparison to its direct rivals, blows the opposition away. The DS currently has around 4,000 titles available and the PSP is miles behind with just over 600 games for sale. It should be noted of course that whilst both the PSP and DS offer full priced shop based games, the iPhone/iPod touch is supported by thousands of small developers, some not even charging a dime for their game. There is also an issue of quality with some games literally lasting a few minutes to complete, but however you look at it, the numbers are impressive and 2010 could be a massive year for the iPhone/touch from a gaming perspective with more and more traditional developers now looking to port over old games and support it with new titles.
