Hard Drive Speed Test

Black Magic Design make a number of industry leading video capture cards, including those which can capture HD material at very high data rates. As a result having a disk with a fast write speed is essential. To aid users in configuring their system for optimal captures Black Magic include a utility with their hardware which records the real world disk speed and gives the framerate available for that speed.

Shown above are two results for the M11x. The first shows the performance of the 500GB Toshiba hard drive which was installed in the system at the factory. Read and Write speeds of 80-90MB/s are exactly what we would expect from a system with the specifications of the M11x.

As we have access to a SSD which has similar specifications to the model Alienware use (differing only in capacity) we installed this in the M11x and ran the test again. As the results show, there are huge performance benefits which can be obtained by opting for the SSD option when purchasing the M11x. It is also worth noting that the SSD option would increase battery life in the system and is less likely to become damaged if the system is dropped at any point.

For those interested in start-up time with the SSD installed, the M11x went from the "Starting Windows" screen to login (including loading facial recognition) within 11 seconds.
