AMD Push Fusion Ahead of Schedule

There is a new breed of processor coming from AMD, a processor that integrates the CPU and GPU onto one die.

Intel already have released their Clarkdale processors which have a GPU and CPU on the same package but not on the same die. The new processors from AMD are more advanced on the GPU side as they are using DirectX 11 5000 series based streaming processors rumoured to be either 240 or 480 in number depending on who you ask.

The Llano processor also gets a new designation of “APU” or Accelerated Processing Unit which combines an Athlon X4 with a GPU on one die at 32nm. The power consumption numbers are very impressive as AMD has made advances in their power gating technology to keep the different type of processors running efficiently.

Eventually the GPU segment of the Accelarated Processor Unit is likely to take care of tasks more traditionally done by the FPU (Floating Point Unit) of a CPU with DirectCompute OpenCL and other initiatives pioneered by the industry.
