James Cameron epic about blue skinned aliens has been a big hit in cinemas around the world and the 3D element some cinemas have been offering has been well received.
Whilst everyone and their grandma seems to be jumping on the 3D bandwagon a cinema in South Korea, CJ-CGV, has been offering the 4D experience for a while now reports Variety.
“There is no 4D theater like ours around the world. CGV’s 4D plex is the first in the world that fully offers five-sense experiences with a movie title,” says Kim Daehee, publicity manager of CJ-CGV.
With the success of Avatar the cinema has opened up 4 more plexes offering the experience and over the past year a full 10 movies have had the 4D treatment according to Kim Daehee.
What is 4D? Most people know that we live in a 3D world with a 4th dimension for our linear travel through time.. however this 4th Dimensional experience is a little different. More like a ride at a theme park, the seats move during viewing and other senses are also stimulated – smell and touch even though we are not quite sure how taste is stimulated, perhaps with the overpriced popcorn and washed down soda. Costing a quite reasonable $15.80 seating is often booked out and there are plans to give the 4D treatment to other movies such as The Lightning Kid.
Neither was Avatar the first 4D movie either and hopefully the 4D theatre experience will be expanded to other countries so the rest of the world can finally experience the 4th Dimension. Many a Star Trek fan would be driven wild with a 4D seven-of-nine. Make it so Hollywood.
