Central Heating From Your Computer

Helsinki has some pretty harsh winters and where temperatures can go as low as minus 30C the city’s energy supplier has come up with a novel way to use the excess heat from a new data centre.

The Guardian reports, “Here, surplus heat from hundreds of computer servers in a new data centre located beneath Uspenski Cathedral, one of the city’s main tourist attractions, will be captured and pumped to heat hundreds of homes and businesses across the Finnish capital.

“This will be the greenest and most energy-efficient data centre in the world,” Juha Sipila, the project manager for Helsingin Energia, the company behind the scheme, said.

Finland has pioneered use of cutting edge technology for its citizens before and continues to do so. If only other countries would take their lead from Finland.

We wonder what the new data centre uses for its core components – Pentium Prescott and Fermi would make a great combination.
