Ve3tro.com has revealed the hard drive install sizes for the Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy XIII. The combined total of the three discs for Xbox 360 equals 18.3 GB, which is considerably less than the Japanese PS3’s 39.4 GB.
The report revealed some of the limitations of the Xbox 360 DVD format – as echoed earlier in the month by the makers of Lost Planet 2 – in that the maximum that can be fit onto a disc, when copy-protection measures are considered, is 6.8 GB. This means across the three discs of Final Fantasy XIII has 2.1 GB being unused.
So do Xbox 360 players miss out? Well, no. The reduction in size can be explained by a few factors. Firstly the compression of cut scenes is more efficient on the Xbox 360 discs. On the PS3 it seems that 32.6 GB is dedicated to Blu Ray quality cut-scenes.
Disc Swapping is also kept to a minimum on the Xbox 360 as the game is linear in nature, meaning it is unlikely that there will be a need to revisit in game areas. This means there’s not a real need to have all discs installed to the hard drive in the first place.
