What is the Buzz about Google Buzz? Not much if you ask Microsoft and Yahoo.
Google Buzz is a new service for users of Gmail allowing users to do more than just e-mail and chat real time. Much like Twitter it will be possible to make status updates and announcements that can be viewed by anyone, but like Facebook you can opt to disclose your innermost thoughts to friends only.
Google said it did not care what its competitors did but listened to its users. In other words Gmail users and using Twitter and Facebook in their millions so Google wants some of that.
Microsoft and Yahoo however told CNN that, “Busy people don’t want another social network, what they want is the convenience of aggregation,” Microsoft said in a statement. “We’ve done that. Hotmail customers have benefited from Microsoft working with Flickr, Facebook, Twitter and 75 other partners since 2008.”
Yahoo tweeted a similar gibe.
“Two years after #Yahoo! launched #Buzz, Google follows suit. Check out the original: http://buzz.yahoo.com/”.
Apparently it took only 1 hour for a response from Microsoft and Yahoo – which illustrates just how concerned the companies are about Google’s recent activities in their traditional markets.
