There is good news for laptop partners and that is that the packaging for the Sandybridge CPU is 22% smaller than Westmere is.
An interesting comparison by Intel and one that bodes well for laptop manufacturers as Westmere is just the CPU die, with Clarkdale being the CPU with GPU built in.
Sandybridge is the working name of the next generation Intel processor that continues on from the success of pairing the CPU package with the GPU die.
One of the key differences is that Intel will be moving in the same direction of AMD with its Fusion and Llano APU with the GPU an onboard the same die as the CPU rather than just in the same package. Currently Clarkdale uses a 32nm CPU with a 45nm GPU all housed in the same package.
Hopefully Intel’s next generation GPU is as advanced, relatively, as the Intel CPU’s as Intel has been known for providing GPU’s with lacklustre 3D performance and key features missing e.g. hardware acceleration of high definition codecs. We expect the Llano APU to offer higher 3D performance simply due to its heritage being the excellent AMD Radeon series.
