Razer Imperator Gaming Mouse – Performance and Software

When it comes to gaming, Razer’s long experience in gaming peripherals really shows.  The Imperator glides more smoothly and effortlessly than almost any gaming mouse that has passed through our labs.  This surprised us a little as the Teflon feet on the base are around half the size of those found on the SteelSeres Xai that is inferior in this respect.

During our testing process the 5600DPI laser sensor tracked flawlessly and its sensitivity is adjustable on-the-fly using the two buttons behind the mouse wheel. There are five different DPI levels that are configurable in the software package provided.

The software package is a little limited when compared to those included with competing gaming mice such as the CM Sentinel.  When compared to those we’ve seen in the past from Razer however it is much better.

The main page of the software enables the user to configure button assignments.  All seven buttons and the mouse-wheel can be configured to any function, key or macro using the drop down menus.  Clicking the ‘manage macros’ tab enables the user to record or import macros which can be assigned to any of the buttons.

The software also allows configuration of the Imperator’s performance.  Each of the five sensitivity stages is configurable for X and Y-Axes independently at 100 DPI increments between 100 and 5600 DPI. There are three different polling rates to choose from; 125, 500 and 1000 Hz and, when enabled, cursor acceleration can be adjusted using a slider on the performance page.

Clicking the ‘profiles’ tab lets the user create and manage different configuration profiles for the mouse; every setting, with the exception of polling rate, can be configured independently for each profile.  Profiles can be switched in game by assigning one of the buttons to the ‘profile’ command. Once all the settings have been configured, they are saved onto the inbuilt memory so we can use the mouse with any computer without needing to install the software.

The final tab has a link to the Razer website where the latest drivers and firmware for the imperator can be downloaded.  It also allows the user to disable the mouse lighting in case it’s not to their personal taste.
