Road in Derby Named After Lara Croft

A new road in Derby costing 36.2 million is going to be named after Lara Croft from the Tomb Raider series after a public vote saw her win by a landslide of 89%.

The Tomb Raider games were created by Core Design, which was based in Derby, making the popular character one of Derby’s best exports.

Other options included former Derby County footballer Steve Bloomer, astronomer John Flamsteed and engineer George Sorocold. 27,000 people decided Lara Croft was the best option.

Councillor Lucy Care said:

“The vote really captured the imagination of people from across the world and, despite my lack of gaming knowledge, I accept that a majority of 89% for Lara Croft is too overwhelming to ignore.

She was created in Derby and deserves to stand alongside some of the more traditional icons of the city.”
