BBC Promises Online Cuts

Product imageMany people in the news industry have been complaining that the BBC has been far too aggressive in its expansion efforts.

The BBC is funded primarily by UK citizens through a licensing fee that is a legal requirement for any household that owns a television or a means to watch televised programmes. Over the past few years the BBC has been very successful in providing online services such as iPlayer and leading the industry online with its news coverage. However this has not been a source of joy for other news providers.

“After years of expansion of our services in the U.K., we are proposing some reductions,” Mark Thompson, director general of the BBC,  “The point of the reductions is not to diminish the service we offer to the public, but rather to focus the license fee and the creative energy of the BBC on delivering the highest quality and the maximum public value.”

Should the BBC be forced to scale back? It is due to complaints by influential business men like Rupert Murdoch who called the BBC “the land of grab” and the Tory government that the BBC is finally listening. They are promising 25% cuts in online coverage. Without the BBC there would be no Top Gear.

At the moment news corporations are trying to figure out how to make money online and Rupert Murdoch’s news corporations are in a transitional phase to becoming subscriber models for its news websites. With free news provided by the BBC and Google’s aggressive indexing of news most people looking for news on the internet will not want to pay for content they can find free elsewhere.
