Bioware Now Think In Franchises

Bioware were a company known for making incredible stand alone innovative games. Rarely did they come back and create an endless stream of sequels when they could be producing something new.

However that has changed and co-leader Ray Muzyka explained the change in mindset at the GDC yesterday. He was quoted as saying:

“We think of our games now in our group as franchises, we really do. Franchises include a lot more than just games.

If you’re not going to take the innovative risks that you need to, then yeah, you’re setting yourself up to be in a death spiral, and that’s a bad thing. You have to invest and innovate. That what’s keeps sequels selling more.

You gotta listen to fans. That’s the most important thing you can do.”

Recent Bioware games, such as Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age, have seen a range of marketing and universe expansion, including websites, comics, expansions and planned sequels.
