Google to Leave China

Google to Leave China

Many experts are expecting Google to announce it is leaving China on April 10th 2010.

Whilst not officially announced it is expected Google will be making a press release on Monday 22nd March 2010. The original source of the current conflict between China and Google may be related to Google’s (sometimes mocked) mantra of “Don’t be evil” which has forced Google in acting on its principals.

China has warned Google and its partners that it would face consequences if it did not obey the laws of the land and that included censoring search results as is standard state practise in some countries such as China.

Originally Google was quite happy to do business with China as it is a massive and growing market, whereas the US and most of Western Europe is saturated and has much lower potential for growth in Google’s main market – internet advertising. However after attacks against human right activists through Google mail, Google decided to consider leaving China or to try and re-negotiate its position with the State.

For Google’s partners in China this is bad news as they relied on Google to sell advertising space, however Microsoft’s Bing has already entered the market with a deal with Motorola through its new phone.

We await until Monday for official confirmation.
