Intel and TSMC Atom Dead

In a first for Intel, an Intel processor was to be fabbed outside of its own plants, TSMC, but due to a lack of demand the link has been postponed.

The plan was to try and compete with the way ARM has been selling its cores that can be added to custom designs to create System on Chip (SoC) processors. The problem Intel faced was that it’s model for processor fabbing does not suit the needs of mobile phone and ultraportables vendors who are outsourcing to companies such as Texas Instruments, Qualcomm and NEC. Even NVIDIA has designed it’s own System on Chip called Tegra with Tegra 2 being heavily pushed this year.

“Intel faces challenges with the SoC model that dominates consumer electronics,” said Jim McGregor, the chief technology strategist at the research firm In-Stat. “They have to be able to spin custom designs quickly and tweak their manufacturing process for each device.”

It seems the market has responded to the idea of a System on Chip for low power devices and that is with a lack of orders forcing the Intel and TSMC partnership to end prematurely.
