Introducing the Digital Economy Bill

Product imageThe UK approves internet privacy and copyright bill

The Digital Economy Bill has finally been approved by Lords in the House of Commons – a bill that has wide ranging powers concerning the internet and have it is governed.

A big win for organisation such as the RIAA AND MPAA – if the bill is pushed through Parliament – and it is likely it will be before the next general election in the UK later this year,  file sharers will have their internet connections cut off.

The Digital Economy Bill was earlier defeated due to the bill containing a clause that would have allowed ministers to change internet copyright laws without legislation. However, with this bill in place it gives the UK government, through court injunctions to block sites as well as users that are deemed to be infringing on copyright material.

Andrew Robinson, from Pirate Party UK,: “The public will not respect a law that was quite literally written by the record industry, for the record industry. As it stands, the bill is fatally flawed, and fundamentally unjust,”said the BBC.

Companies like Google, Facebook and British Telecom have opposed suspending internet users, opting for the more humane issuing of fines.

Earlier we reported how the internet was a fundamental right according to many users in the world and now we are faced with the double edged sword of responsibility – what to do with those that misuse the internet.
