Self Charging Phone Patented

Self Charging Phone Patented

Nokia have patented a technique that will enable them to create a phone that charges itself.

The patent outlines a method for converting kinetic energy into a charge that the mobile phone battery can store.

The device will use piezoelectric crystals, which create an electric current when bent or compressed. The patent outlines a method to use two rails to move up and down when the phone is also moved by the user standing up or walking, which would in turn create the electric current, charging a capacitor which then charges the battery.

With help from Princeton University it is only now possible that piezoelectric crystals can be used in a device such as a mobile phone as they needed extremely high heat to be created which would damage the other components of an electrical device. The university have made it possible to print the crystals on a flexible rubber like material.

The day of the car and wall charger may finally be coming to an end but with Nokia patented the idea other manufacturers will have to find their own way to use piezoelectric crystals in a phone.
