Xbox 360 Slim?

Xbox 360 Slim?

A Chinese site has posted pictures of a possible shrunk Xbox 360 motherboard with Kotaku speculating a new Xbox 360 model is on the cards soon.

The pictures show a new Xbox 360 motherboard supporting a new layout that seems to combine the CPU and GPU with its 10MB eDRAM the new pictures look to be genuine. This is reminiscent of the early PS3 Slim pictures found on a Chinese website earlier in 2009 which eventually proved to be genuine.

At the moment the “Jasper” model has a 65nm CPU and separate 65nm GPU with the eDRAM at 80nm – the CPU is a custom IBM design and fabbed by IBM themselves whilst the eDRAM is fabbed by NEC.

Essentially combining 3 dies into one using the latest 40/45nm node technology will be a huge saving on three fronts
1. cost
2. power
3. heat

Sony has already been successful in shrinking the PS3 with a new model dubbed the PS3 Slim which has boosted sales and in Sony’s case allowed a $100 price cut as well reducing the amount of mony Sony lost on each console as reported by Hardware Heaven earlier.

There is also speculation with the new pictures that Microsoft may be considering an internal hard drive due to the two SATA ports found on the motherboard. The cooling seen on the Xbox 360 may not be final, it is at the moment a huge Coolermaster fan.
