How did HDTV kill the monitor market?

According to Pete Brown, a Developer Division Community Program Manager at Microsoft, High Definition TV has murdered the LCD monitor market. Due to the advent of the 1080p standard LCD’s have not increased in DPI significantly over the last few years.

We have also noticed a trend for manufacturers to release screens at a 1080p resolution for their 24 inch models rather than the 1200p that was prevalent a few years ago. One of the reasons for this is cost cutting but it has not helped developers and other geeky people realise their dream of an LCD monitor with a higher DPI. At the moment there are only few screens with a higher DPI, some offering 2560 x 1600 resolution but those are for larger screens.

Have a read of what Pete Brown is saying in his rant.
