The latest firmware update for the Sony Playstation 3, version 3.21, has been released. Where this differs from other versions is that instead of introducing new features, this shuts off old ones – specifically the “Install Other OS” option that owners of the original “fat” PS3’s could choose.
The decision to ditch other OS support was put down to security concerns, a way of avoiding malicious hacking action, however some of the media has viewed the move as slightly more cynical. It has been suggested it is a pre-emptive move against privacy.
Users can elect not to upgrade, however choosing not to will mean they can’t sign into the Playstation Network, play games or blu-ray movies that need 3.21 or later. Access to copy protected videos and any other features after the firmware update will also be off the table, making the PS3 little more than a paperweight.
