Llano Sampling

Llano Sampling

The future is Fusion and that means CPU and GPGPU on one die.

The programmability of the GPU has meant it is has far exceeded its original specification, no longer does it just accelerate 3D graphics. With the advent of OpenCL and DirectCompute the GPU has become more flexible from a software standpoint and has been becoming more flexible with each iteration of DirectX.

One of the main benefits of GPU’s is their enormous parrellel architecture and floating point prowess. AMD has been on a course to integrate this into one die for years with the result being Fusion – and the first Fusion product is almost upon us: Llano.

Based on a quad core Phenom II design without the L3 cache and with a 5000 series class GPU integrated on die AMD has been sending samples out to OEM’s.

It won’t stop there though, with AMD’s newest processor, called Bobcat, also being paired with DirectX 11 graphics according to a report at Xbitlabs.
