McAfee Breaks Windows

Users of Windows XP SP3 and McAfee Anti-Virus found that svchost.exe was quarantined.

McAfee’s virus definition 5958 was not tested woth Windows XP SP3 and therefore when it was released into the wild it decided a crucial service for running Windows XP SP3 was a virus and quarantined it resulting in reboots and failed machines.

McAfee denied many users were affected but Hardware Heaven has first hand knowledge that many large organisations were affected by the false positives.

“”We are not aware of significant impact on consumers,” McAfee said in a statement. “We are investigating how the incorrect detection made it into our DAT files and will take measures to prevent this from reoccurring.””

Measures that include testing on all operating systems supported would be a good starting point.
