AMD’s attempt to marry the CPU and GPU known as Fusion is ahead of schedule and may be released this year.
Fusion, as reported before at Hardware Heaven, is the combination of the CPU and GPU on one die. AMD, with its ATI team dominate the GPU scene currently and their CPU’s are classed as best for performance in many segments of the market. Combining the two will be a product that will go beyond its normal market. Many developers are beginning to use the awesome power of GPU calculations to accelerate their applications. GPU’s also contain dedicated hardware for accelerating video as well as effects within operating systems for a prettier user interface.
Intel were first with their Clarkdale CPU+GPU combination but this time AMD will be directly putting the GPU element onto the die rather than the way Intel combined two separate dies (on different processes) into one package.
