Larrabee not dead

Larrabee not dead

Making names of products is not big and clever but Intel’s foray back into the serious GPGPU arena has not been slightly amusing.

Semiaccurate, who loves a good GPU story, has been proposing the CPU and semiconductor giant is still working on the son of Larrabee.

The reason why Larrabee is important to Intel is that the competition from AMD and NVIDIA is beginning to encroach on Intel’s main products – the CPU. As GPU’s gain more programmability and flexibility the CPU is being seen as less important in a system and this will in the long term hurt Intel unless it has its own product.

Intel are hoping to have an answer with the reworking of Larrabee in the near future, however it needs to compete on price, performance and features if it is to survive as a GPU for gaming rather than a GPGPU.
