Worm Spreading Fast

Worm Spreading Fast

Smiley face pictures are a no-no.

Yahoo Instant Messaging users are being warned by Symanctec, BitDefender and BKIS about an old worm in a new variant. The malware is spreading by using a phishing attack, a smiley face from a friend. This triggers a download of an .exe file which acts as a backdoor. The backdoor adds itself to the Windows firewall allowed list, turns off Windows Update and then possibly allows downloads of other malware secretly such as keyloggers and other nasties.

“The nature of this attack is nothing new, because some worms already used this way of attack,” BKIS researchers blogged. “However, it is always potentially dangerous to [unaware] users. Bad guys have integrated some phishing elements to trick [the] user into clicking the link and then opening the downloaded file.”
