Asus have gone for a sci-fi style design on their Matrix card packaging and give little information about the card on the front of the box. Inside we find a good bundle which includes a CrossFire connector and HDMI to DVI dongle. Also included is a leather CD wallet and Republic of Gamers case sticker but no free games are present.

The basic design of the Matrix card is similar to a standard 5870 however the cooler shroud has been significantly enhanced to give it a much more impressive styling and added to the back is a large backplate. What this hides is a significant amount of re-engineering which has taken place on this particular model. First up is something which Asus call Super Hybrid Engine, power circuitry which reduces power noise by 54% allowing higher GPU speed. Next up is iTracker2 which allows users to save memory profiles for various scenarios as well as overclock. We also have a redesigned fan which increases airpressure by 22% and the last significant change is the inclusion of Probelt which allows easy measurement of GPU, Memory and PCIe voltage with a multimeter.

Asus go with three outputs on their Matrix 5870 and that means HDMI, DisplayPort and Dual-link DVI. As expected support for 7.1 audio out is also available on the Matrix including Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio. Also present on the PCIe bracket is a safe mode button which allows the card to boot at settings which would allow the user to recover from tweaking which causes any issues with stability. Along the top edge of the card we can see the 2x8pin power sockets with two CrossFire connectors at the opposite end. Finally at the top is a section which lights up in various colours depending on the status of the card load.

In terms of specifications we have a 40nm Cypress GPU which contains 1600 Stream Processors 80 texture units and 32 ROPs. There are 2.15 billion transistors packed into the 5870 core and it is connected to the 2GB of GDDR5 via a 256-bit bus. Asus set the core to 894MHz with memory at 1200MHz. This card supports DirectX 11 with Shader Model 5 additionally like other recent ATI cards the Matrix supports PCI-Express 2 and as well as Blu-Ray acceleration via ATI Avivo.
