Like the packaging in which it arrives the ARES is a huge, a three slot card measuring 11×5 inches it weighs 2.25kg compared to the reference 5970 at 1.2kg. A large metal shroud covers the dual 99.9% oxygen free copper heatsinks, each featuring four 8mm heatpipes. In the centre of the cooler is a single 8cm fan with 9 blades. Between the copper heatsinks, fan and cover is an extra layer of metal which acts as a cooler for the various components on the card and at the top right of the 12 layer PCB we find three power connectors, two 8-pin and one 6-pin. Along the bottom edge of the card is a PCI-Express 2.1 connector.

The ARES has three outputs in the form of Dual-Link DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort which can each power a single display. HDCP is supported, as is audio out over each of the connectors and like other Radeon 5000 series products we can utilise Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio.

The back of the card is fully covered by another large metal plate which aids the thermal performance as well as providing structural reinforcement to ensure optimal durability, one of the reasons the card has a 3-year warranty.

Underneath the cooler we find two Radeon 5870 cores which are 40nm parts with 32 ROPs, 1600 unified shaders and support for DirectX 11, Shader Model 5.0 and DirectCompute 5.0. The 850MHz cores are connected to 4GB of 1200MHZ GDDR5 by two 256-bit memory buses which provide the card with over 150GB/s of bandwidth.
