Chillblast Fusion Challenger PC Review

High Definition Playback

Blu-Ray 3D Playback: Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 3D is encoded in High Definition 1080p format using MPEG4 AVC compression and comes on a dual layer (50GB) disc. The aspect ratio of 2.35:1 is used with letterbox bars at the top and bottom of the 16:9 image. This portion of the movie has an average video bitrate of around 30MBPS and regularly peaks above this making it one of the most demanding Blu-Rays on the market. For comparison, a movie such as Casino Royale has a bitrate of 24MBPS.

Results

Due to the inclusion of a HDMI port and SPDIF out ASUS GTX 460 and motherboard it is very easy to connect the system to a HDTV and surround sound amp so we were keen to see how the Challenger would handle playback of 1080p content and to test the most demanding scenario possible we run a 3D Blu-Ray which of course uses two image streams, doubling the bitrate.

The above results show the performance of the system when our i3 processor is handling the playback of MKV/Blu-Ray with assistance from the GTX 460. By installing PowerDVD 10 Ultra 3D Mark 2 we are able to pass the processing of HD video content from the CPU to GPU simply by ticking a box in the options. With GPU acceleration enabled the processor use drops to as low as 0.2% on 3D Blu-Ray. With a maximum CPU use of 2.8% this means that we can play 1080p (and 720p) files with ease and it also ensures there are resources free to perform other tasks while HD content is playing.
