Inside our review sample Dell installed a Core i5-460M CPU which is a 2.53GHz processor based on the 32nm Arrandale core. It features turbo mode which automatically adjusts the speed depending on load with a maximum of 2.8GHz available and options such as the i7-840QM are also available.

The memory installed on in XPS 15 was Samsung branded DDR3-1333 which was running at 1066MHz and the motherboard chipset used by Dell on this model is Intel’s HM57. Our configuration used 2x 2GB and 6/8GB setups are available.

In terms of graphics the core i5 based XPS 15 models have two GPU’s available. The first is integrated within our 460M CPU and is the Intel HD chipset which supports DirectX 10 and runs at 373MHz, sharing system memory. This is ideal for desktop use but when we want to do something more demanding, such as gaming, the system takes advantage of Nvidia’s Optimus technology and seamlessly switches to the inbuilt GeForce GT 420M GPU. This higher specification model supports DirectX11, PhysX, CUDA and Blu-Ray 3D. It has a core speed of 500MHz, its own 1GB of GDDR3 running at 800MHz and contains 16ROPs with 96 1000MHz shader processors.

For those who want an even higher specification GPU Dell also offer the 2GB GT 435M as an option.

In terms of other components within the system our review sample contained a 7200rpm, 500GB Samsung drive with 16MB cache and Intel Wireless-N 1000 mini PCIe card. Dell also offer Samsung based SSDs, 6300 series Wi-Fi, WiMAX, 3G/EVDO-HSPA mobile broadband cards and Nvidia 3D Play compatibility.
