Media Encoding

Our Media Encoding test uses the latest CS5 software from Adobe. Adobe Media Encoder accesses all of the cores/threads on our CPU and therefore shows the best CPU encoding performance. To test performance we run a 1920×1080 file (custom recording) through the encoder set to the highest quality Blu-Ray profiles.

Our music conversion test takes an 18 track lossless album and converts it using dBpoweramp into 128Kbps Mp3 format.

Photoshop mainly benefits from raw CPU speed however our media encoding tests take full advantage of all four CPU threads and the i5-460M’s Turbo Mode to enhance performance further. For music encoding the software assigns a track per thread which means four are being converted at any one time and the result is a full 80minute, lossless album converted to MP3 in just under a minute and a half. Also worth noting is that for those applications that use a single core for their conversion the CPU runs at 2.8GHz via turbo, rather than 2.5GHz to ensure optimal encoding time.
