Foxconn to make smartphones and tablet PCs for Vizio

Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) has landed OEM orders of smartphones and tablets for US-based LCD TV vendor Vizio.

Market sources indicated that Vizio aims to challenge leading vendors such as Samsung Electronics and Sony in the consumer electronics (CEs) market. There will be over 45 vendors competing in the tablet PC market, and a price war is expected to happen, market sources estimate. Prices for tablet PC are expected to drop up to 30-40%.

Global tablet PC shipments in 2010 are expected to reach 18 million units and grow to 50-60 million units in 2011, and LG Display, who is the leading suppliers of tablet PCs, is more optimistic regarding the market and expects the market to reach 80 million units worldwide.

Vizio plans to showcase its 4-inch smartphone, the Via Phone, and the 8-inch tablet PC, the Via Tablet, at the upcoming CES 2010 in Las Vegas, and is eyeing the demand from customers who cannot afford high-price Apple products with with friendly pricing.

The device is reportedly a 8-inch tablet PC that supports Wi-Fi connection but is uncertain about 3G connection. The smartphone reportedly to adopt the Android operating system, and has found cooperating telecommunication service providers to partner with.

For Vizio’s LCD TV business, the US-based vendor beat out Samsung with 19.9% market share in the third quarter of 2010 in the US market. Samsung accounted for 17.7% of the US LCD TV market in the third quarter. As Vizio’s sales during the Black Friday holiday were good, Vizio is expected to remain the leading LCD TV vendor in the US market in the fourth quarter of 2010.
