AMD 990X Chipset Launch featuring ASUS Republic of Gamers Crosshair V Formula and MSI 990FXA-GD80 Motherboards

Multi-GPU Performance – SLI

To test the performance of discrete GPUs on the various platforms we are using 3DMark 11 set to Xtreme mode using a two GeForce GTX 580s.

Other than support of future AMD CPUs there is one key aspect which separates the 990FX from the 890FX, the added support for SLI. On the older chipset we were limited to CrossFire or single GPU configurations. For this new chipset there are no limits, we can even enable 3-Way SLI.

To enable the technology we simply install the latest NVIDIA driver (275.37) and as normal, turn on SLI in the NVIDIA control panel, there are no complicated steps… it works just as it does on other platforms.

With SLI enabled we see that scaling on AMD is good, once again the Intel based system edges ahead in 3DMark performance but there is little to choose between the two architectures.
