Microsoft Launches Kinect Accelerator Initiative

Microsoft Launches Kinect Accelerator Initiative

Microsoft has announced a new initiative that will provide a number of developers with the tools and resources to create business-focused programs for its motion-controlled Kinect hardware.
The Kinect Accelerator is looking to support “entrepreneurs, engineers and innovators” who want to leverage the Kinect hardware to implement a range of business ideas.
Developers are able to apply for the Kinect Accelerator grant now via the Microsoft website, then ten finalists will be chosen early next year to receive the funding.
Finalists will receive $20,000, an Xbox development kit, the Windows Kinect SDK and office space in Seattle, Washington, along with technical support and mentorship from Microsoft executives and investors.
Each company will then be given the opportunity to present its ideas to Microsoft investors and venture capitalists at an Investor Demo Day.
Microsoft stated that it is looking for a wide range of entries, including programs focusing on retail, education, healthcare, art installations and gaming, as long as it can be turned into a commercial business.
The Kinect Accelerator program is part of Microsoft’s push for Kinect to be part of the business world.
A beta version of the Kinect Windows SDK is currently available, with multi-core skeletal tracking just one of the features that is offered to developers.
