IE for Windows 8 on ARM will not support Flash

Internet Explorer for Windows 8 on ARM-based devices won’t support plugins due to their propensity to lead to unstable performance and worse battery life. Internet Explorer on ARM chips, even in the regular desktop, wouldn’t run Flash or any similar browser add-ins.

Apple started the trend by blocking Flash from its iOS devices. The trend continues as Adobe will soon stop developing its Flash player for Android and BlackBerry and Google’s latest update to the Chrome browser does not support the most recent version of Flash.

As Flash quickly disappears on mobiles, it begs the question as to how long the one-time online video standard will remain viable in desktop browsers.

Windows 8 on chips using Intel’s x86 architecture will still support Flash, but only in the desktop version and not in the Metro interface Microsoft is encouraging most to use. In both cases, Microsoft is steering users towards universal standards like HTML5.
