Asustek to launch Cedar Trail-based netbook in March

With Acer having already started selling its new Cedar Trail-based netbook, Asustek Computer also plans to launch the Cedar Trail-based Eee PC 1011CX in March, according to sources from upstream component players.

Although Intel announced that players including Acer, Lenovo, Asustek, Hewlett-Packard (HP), Samsung Electronics and Toshiba will all launch Cedar Trail-based netbooks, so far, only Acer and Asustek have confirmed they will launch products, while there is currently still no firm information about when the other vendors will launch their products.

Global netbook shipments in 2011 were about 28-30 million units and the volume is expected to drop to only 20-25 million units in 2012; however, since many vendors have already started stepping out of the industry, Asustek and Acer are expected to be able to see their shipments to reach more than four million units for the year.

Although netbooks have almost no room for survival in mature markets such as Europe and the US, since demand from emerging markets including India, Indonesia and Southeastern Asia countries, is still strong, while Intel is allowing netbooks to feature 12-inch screens with a price below US$359, shipments are still expected to stay at a certain level.

Acer’s 10.1-inch AOD270 netbook features the Atom 2600 processor and Windows 7 Starter and is currently priced at NT$8,990 (US$305).
