Corsair Announces Force Series GS SSDs

Connoisseurs of SSDs know current NAND flash for SSDs comes in 3 varieties — fast, faster, and fastest. These can also be called asynchronous, synchronous, and toggle NAND respectively.

Those users that want the ultimate in SSD performance seek out the fastest SSD controllers paired with the fastest NAND flash. This is why we have paired the SandForce SF-2200 SSD Processor with toggle flash to create the Force Series™ GS line of SSDs.

Toggle NAND does exceptionally well with random writes which can be the Achilles’ heel of an SSD. Force Series GS SSDs are capable of an astonishing 90,000 IOPs, or input/output operations per second. The raw transfer rate of an SSD is essential for overall performance and especially so when dealing with large and contiguous files. Force Series GS SSDs have a great transfer rate however, it’s the IOPs capability that comes into play when dealing with non-contiguous (aka random) files. Force Series GS performs very well in both areas.

In the past, we’ve included some standard benchmarks for our other SSD offerings. Here, we’ve included those standard benchmarks for a single 240GB Force Series GS and also two of them in a RAID 0 stripe. As always, we’ll lead off with an ATTO screen shot.

ATTO is an industry standard test for measuring drive performance:

“As the industry’s leading provider of high-performance storage connectivity products, ATTO has created a widely-accepted Disk Benchmark freeware utility to help measure storage system performance. Disk Benchmark identifies performance in hard drives, solid state drives, RAID arrays as well as connections to storage.

Futuremark’s PCMark Vantage has long been a staple of ours to help illustrate the real world performance capabilities of our drives:

“A PCMark score is a measure of your computer’s performance across a variety of common tasks such as viewing and editing photos, video, music and other media, gaming, communications, productivity and security.”

A good old fashioned hand timed file transfer comparison is always a good indicator of real world performance. We’ve reused the same 21.9GB file transfer test file from our previsous testing and the Force Series GS SSD doesn’t disappoint. The test file contains variety of files types and sizes including incompressible files to really give the tested drive or drives a good workout in a simulated real world task.

The single drive is exceptionally fast and of course, the RAID 0 array takes it to a new level. The single Force Series GS wrote the files in an impressive 1min 41s and the RAID 0 array shaved 30s off of that! Just imagine the time saved working with large files over the course of a year.

Of course, we’ve included the IOPs test results using IOMeter 2008. The IOPs numbers for both the single drive and the two drives striped are extremely impressive.

The new Force Series GS SSDs are immediately available in a 240GB capacity with 180GB, 360GB, and 480GB capacities coming along very soon. A Force Series GS SSD, or a pair of them, would be equally at home in a work station, a gaming rig, or in any computing environment where maximum I/O performance is critical.
